Sowing and Reaping

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome's teaching on sowing seed-offerings in last month's issue of Rhapsody of Realities spoke so clearly to me that I wanted to share this excerpt:

"The ransom of a man's life are his riches" -Proverbs 13:8
Material riches that you ar eblessed with are not just for you and your family to enjoy and spend. They are the seeds the Lord provides you with to sow as offerings to ransom your life from evil.
Sowing seed-offerings over and above your tithe silences Satan and prevents him from gaining any foothold in your life. It obliterates all obstacles and snares in your path.
Money is often a weapon of war. When the walls seem to be closing in on you, you need to declare war in the realm of the spirit by taking a seed (somthing of value to you), speak over it by faith and hand it over to the Lord. That seed represents your understanding of the situation you are in and what you expect to come out of the situation as you hand it over to the Lord. When you operate in that kind of faith, no evil can touch you. God Himself becomes the only security you need and keeps you moving from victory to victory.
"May the Lord remember all your sacrifices and accept your offerings.
May He give you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed"
-Psalm 20:3-4

God created you with a plan

It is such an honour and a privilege to have our first dedicated partner on board with us that I want to share an excerpt from her book.

Sanyika Calloway Boyce is a speaker, author, financial intelligence and expert and radio show host but above all these accolades she is a wonderful woman of God. Her best-selling book for the youth : Cracking the code-What every college student should know about money will undoubtedly touch many peoples' lives but what profoundly touched my life was the ministry work she began and is less well known for. It is my prayer that through her partnership with us her message to God's people about Kingdom finance will spread and reach all those who are yearning to know God's purposes and plans.

This is an excerpt from her book 7 Steps to understand what God says about money, wealth and possessions:

God created you with a plan in mind.

Regardless of your current circumstances, in spite of what your life is like right now, you have every reason to believe that God's Plan for your life is perfectly clear. God wants us to develop a right attitude towards money, wealth and posessions. He has made us stewards of everything we own. Doesn't it make sense that He also gives us proper instruction about how to manage these things?

What does your life say about you? Could a non-beleiver look at all aspects of your life and see a clear difference? The world teaches people to rob God by becoming overworked and unwilling to give of their time and resources to anything. When you are so busy trying to keep pace with the world that you are no longer available for service, you are "of the world". Christians are called to be "in the world" but not of it.

Work is sacred. God designed all forms of work for His purposes and when we are obedient in the work we do to please Him, we are always rewarded. But those who are of the world work only for money and end up mis-using all their resources.

Through the work that you do, God wants you to have:

  • Direction for your life

  • deliverance from debt

  • Knowledge of God's will for your finances

  • Peace

  • propserity in all areas of your life.

Today I give Lord Jesus all the honour and glory for bringing "True Love Waits" to Lesotho. This is only one project that our ministry is working on to change mindsets in Lesotho but it represents a tremendous breakthrough as the doors were never opened before for this programme to take root here. In our pastors' meeting this morning, a member of our advisory board said : "I think we have about 8 chapters to work on all at once but could we just concentrate on chapter 1 for today?" This was an extremely apt remark -so I am leaving chapter 1 in God's hands and waiting for His prefect timing to reveal when to move on to chapter 2. But i was so excited about chapter 8, revealed through Sanyika's partnership with us, that I couldn't help sharing it! Hope it blesses you as much as it blessed me.

New Year's Day

I spent New Year's eve and New Year's day with friends from Word of Life who were visiting from the U.S and the team from Life Ministries. Pastor Dube from Word of Life held an all-night prayer vigil to pray us into the new season the Lord is ushering in.

To describe this new season, the Lord told Pastor Dube to look up all the references in the Bible of the Hebrew word 'Kabod'. It is most commonly translated as "glory" but Pastor Dube discovered the hidden layers of meaning of this term as he studied the way it is used.

It first appears in the book of Isaiah, where it is translated as 'glory' and is affixed to the Hebrew word 'Doxa' which means to shine. In the Old testament, God makes it clears that when His glory descends on Israel, His children shine in all that they do.

In the New Testament, the word 'Kabod' appears when Jesus is telling the disciples that they are a royal priesthood, that as they ask they shall receive, that all things work together for the good of those who love God and that he came so that we could have life and have it more abundantly. (Books of Mark and Romans). It has thus been translated in English as abundance, importance or divine favour. Then it appears again in the Book of Revelation with the word 'Doxa' affixed to it, to show that when the Sons of God become manifest, they will shine so brightly that they will leave no doubt that Jesus Christ 's glory has descended over them.

As we prayed all believers in our congregations, communities and spheres of influence into this season of "Kabod', miracles started to unfold. By the time New Year's day was unshered in, I knew that my time of serving at the Louis Gregory Foundation is coming to an end, having prepared me for the mininstry the Lord is now calling me into: helping Life Ministries to develop and grow their new Christian school. It was a very brief season of opportunity at the Louis Gregory Foundation and I realise now that this was not where the Lord wanted me to serve but only the environment that was conducive to my training for ministry. As I realised that this is the season of bringing glory to Lord Jesus, it became perfectly clear that God is always in full control even when we don't understand where His plan is taking us. It can only ever take us Higher, to become seated in heavenly places, or deeper into His Word. As you glorify Him in this new season, may you learn to Shine!

Don't start 2009 in neutral

In Joshua 1, verses 6-9, the Lord tells believers who are called to lead others 'Be strong and courageous'. He says this 3 times, reminding us Christians are called to be on the offensive.
As we prepared to put 2008 behind us and embrace the coming season, the Life Ministries team was extremely blessed to receive funding from the Louisiana District Action Leadership to build a Christian school for the 180 children who have been attending Bible classes this year. They will also be sending dvd's to train the youth pastors in using drama to build a childrens' ministry.
Now we have to continue praying and moving into this new season with clarity, focus and confident trust in the Lord.

I asked the Lord yesterday how to practically translate this understanding into action and I beleive the Holy Spirit answered through a letter I received from Gary Blair, founder of the 100-day Challenge. Now that the 2008 challenge is over and some of us are taking time to enjoy time with family, there is a danger that we will miss the next move of God by staying in neutral. While balance in all areas of our life is something we must constantly strive for, we should never use this an excuse to become lukewarm or passive about the things of God. When Gary Blair reminded me not to start 2009 in neutral, I immediately realised that the Lord was dealing with me.

Praise the Lord that there is always an answer to our prayers. Mine came in the form of the Contemplative questions Gary gave me to ask myself as I prepare to get in gear for 2009:

1. How should I live out each day so that I am fulfilled in 2009?
2. Am I becoming the person I am meant to be?
3. In order to reach my goals in 2009, what habits and disciplines must I initiate immediately?
4. what can I begin doing today to leave a lasting legacy?
5. Which vices must I replace with virtues?
6. How can I best contribute to the lives of others?

" Habits- both good and bad alike- are lifelong companions and hold court every day, acting as judge and jury over our development"

Thanksgiving

The rich dreams blog reminded me that gratitude is an imporant part of being open to receive whatever the universe has in store for us. I loved the idea of a jar in which to store all things one is grateful for and began clearing my desk to make space for the jar. It was then that I discovered that my laptop has been stolen. I could hardly beleive it. I kept going over my recent comings and goings, asking myself whether I didn't take it off the desk and place it somewhere else. But I knew in my heart that it was gone and the only expalantion is that someone went into my bedroom when I wasn't there and helped themselves to it. Who would do that? Who would have the nerve to just go into someone's private space in broad daylight and take something? I always assumed that by working from home this was one "reality" I never had to think much about. What upset me most about the theft was not losing the laptop but realising that "there are things that have to be taken care of in the natural". No matter how spiritual we are, no matter how deep our relationship with God, no matter how much positive energy we put out and no matter how much we focus on finding the good in others, this earthly life brings us into daily contact with the things of the flesh.
It was extremely difficult to stay focused ont he task of making a list of things to put in my gratitude jar and since in this aprt of the world we don't celebrate thanksgiving anyway, my thoughts quickly turned to despair. That laptop was the only tangible evidence that 'God supplies all of our needs" for me in recent months. Committting myself to a life of full-time ministry and writing has attracted opposition from every side and I don't have the resources to live by this decision. The Lord showed me that I have to trust Father completely at this time to provide all of my needs and when I received the laptop, it was like a sign from heaven helping me stay on course. Of all the things the thief could have taken this was the one thing that I really felt as a loss. This was one thing I had real difficulty detaching from and forgiving him/ her for. Writing is my life. It is not losing the laptob that dealt such a cruel blow; it is losing all the material stored on it. Luckily, the really important documents were copied on my flash-disk so i really shouldn't be all that upset. But when I phoned Beth and she counseled me about "the balloon of ego being popped", I realised what the lesson was really about.
The thorn in our flesh that the Lord does not remove is there to remind us to humble ourselves before God. It reminds us that His glory is made manifest in weakness, that we can never attain the heights of revelation knowledge without His grace and that He really is all we need to accomplish anything.

Thank you Beth.
This amazing woman of God has taught me so much and every lesson she imparts always has "Humility" as a core principle in it. If there is one fruit of the spirit I am so grateful for seeing in my life it is this humility that Beth models so perefctly. I'm still working on allowing the Holy Spirit to produce the other fruits and I have discovered that they are seasonal.
Once, when I was going through a dark valley and crying out to the Lord "Why is it so dark in this valley? (as though a valley could be anything but dark!), Randel took me by the shoulders and said: "we've just had a wonderful summer season. Now we're entering a winter season. It can't be summer all the time". I've always hated winter but I learned then to rejoice in suffering as the only way to get across that dark valley. By the time I got through that experience, all the joy I once drew from my relationship with Lord Jesus was used up. But by then, I had learned to invite the Holy Spirit to teach me patience.
The patience that I learned to pray for and that God in His grace gave me was staring to wear thin in the past couple of weeks. Everything has a sell-by date and the time I was given to walk in patience was drawing to a close. Now I have to tackle another of the frutis of the spirit. But on this Tree of Life that God has planted in my mind, Humility always bursts forth to see me through the next stage, the nest season or the nexy trial that awaits me. And it is always Beth who is there to remind to receive this fruit.
How did she ever learn to radiate all 9 fruits of the spirit? I wonder often. By coming through persecution, loss, heartache and fear and emerging victorious as she rose from the ashes of the fire that killed her husband Martin. Do we all have to go through those kinds of experiences to receive more of God's revealtion, grace and presence operating in our lives? I always ask myself. Yes. It is not an easy answer to hear but that is why God occasionaly pops the balloon of our inflated ego. He alone can lift us up out of the dust and painful experiences are what send us running to Him, ready to admit that there is no way we can do x,y,z that He has placed in our hearts without His power and love.
So although in this part of the world we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, I am giving God thanks today for teaching me humility-again.
I am also giving thanks for every teacher, mentor and friend who has accompanied me on this journey and helped me to grow in some way. I would not be where I am today without God's grace but I also would not be here without you.
There is a beautiful greeting that is used in some rural African regions instead of just hello: "If you are here, then I am here too".
There is nothing more precious than coming before the throne of grace and hearing the Lord say those same words. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for forgiving the person who stole my laptop and sending me running back to your throne, where Beth was waiting to remind me that I can't do anything without you but I can do anything with Your grace, laptop or no laptop.

You can read about Beth's story in a book by Cynthia Heald: "Maybe God is right." Beth and her husband Martin were missionaries in Afghanistan and were taken hostage by Al-Queda rebels for 9 months. during their ordeal, no amount of starvation, torture, beating or indoctrination could break Martin's spirit. every day he prayed for the salvation of his captors, praised the Lord for using him as an instrument of His peace and boldly proclaimed the sovereignty of Lord Jesus. Finally the rebels had enough and killed him. Beleiving that this would break Beth's spirit and she would renounce Jesus and do what they wanted her to do for them, they took her out to see Martin's lifeless body. She received a vision of Martin in heaven with the Lord, telling her :"Forgive them so that Father can forgive them". As she obeyed this commandment and reached out to her captors with God's love, they fell to their knees and repented. All 7 rebels received Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour that day. Even today, Beth reminds those whom she minsiters to that there was no way she would have ever come through these experiences without God's grace and the fear of terrorist groups has stayed with her as the thorn in her side. The ongoing fear she has lived with since was the only part of her story I didn't know about until today. I am sufficiently humbled for her openess in sharing this.

God Bless everyone who is celebrating Thanksgiving today.

The Anchor

I have had to concentrate on my actual writing during the past month. This blog started as a way to trace and share my journey from knowing and understanding the kingdom of heaven within to spreading this awareness by building the Kingdom of God in the external.

Before any building project can begin, there needs to be a solid foundation and this blog was a way of testing the foundation I had laid. I discovered two things: the foundation on which I planned to build was not strong enough and the foundation on which Lord Jesus built his church is the reliable one. So I am leaving this blog to drift into the ocean of other blogs out there and maybe it will provide rest and a measure of hope for "a certain person travelling down from Jerusalem to Jericho". I was favoured during the process of exploring the places to which a prayer journey led me to meet a wonderful editor and man of God who is now helping me put my actual writing into a teaching series and I hope anyone who stumbles across this blog will be inspired to study the topic of consecration further.

In preparing to leave this blog to accomplish whatever the Holy Spirit wants to use it for, I received a song that spoke directly to my current situation and that seems a fitting way to close. I don't know the title of the song or who the artist is, as I only caught the last two verses:

I've had visions and dreams

But I never knew

They would slip through my fingers

Like grains of sand

The anchor holds

Though the ship is battered

The anchor holds

Though the sails are torn

I have fallen on my knees

As I faced the raging seas

The anchor still holds

In spite of the storm

Interruptions

I have had to interrupt publishing the posts for weeks 2-4 of my prayer journey due to a heavy workload, limited access to the internet and new developments that require me to stand in the gap for a particular family struggling to 'run in the right direction". As I asked those in my circle of influence to pray for this family and to help me stand in the gap for them, I was led to share the story I heard from Greg Laurie of Harvest Ministries.

A soccer team (football in the U.S) had just recruited a new player who although young and inexperienced, was considered a top athlete. For the first half of the game, the rookie was so nervous to be in a large stadium with a huge crowd that he hardley had any control of the ball. The team was losing and as the first half was about to end, the rookie in desperation got hold of the ball and started running with all his might towards the goalpost. The problem was that in his desperation and nervousness, he didn't realise that he was runing in the wrong direction and was headed straight towards the opposition's goalpost. Seconds before he was about to score a goal for the opposing team, the captain of his team caught up with him and tackled him to the ground, saving the day.

In the change-room at half-time, the rookie hung his head in shame as he waited for the coach to adminish him and kick him off the team. To everyone's surprise, the coach simply said:
"The same players are all going out for the second half".
The rookie looked up and protested:
"But coach, I can't go out there again! I embarrassed the team in front of millions of people."
"That was in the first half. This is the second half. Now get out there and show the crowd what you are capable of"
The team won hands down as the rookie scored goal after goal and he went on to become a star player.

Many of us spent years running in the wrong direction, winning victories for the enemy. Through it all, the Lord just patiently waited for us to come to Him and repent and then sent us back out to the world armed with renewed confidence in His wisdom, protection and guidance to show them what he has accomplished in and through us.
The family I am standing in the gap for at this time have a member who is still running in the wrong direction and the captain has been desperately trying to catch up to him before he scores a goal for the enemy. I have known this family for many years and know that as soon as they are playing on the winning side, they will be a family of star players.

Standing in the gap for individuals, groups or agents requires a different kind of prayer and application of God's Word. I won't have time to share this on the blog so if you need more information about this topic, please be patient until it appears in printed format - hopefully all teaching resources will be available in printed format by January 2009.

In the meantime, support is needed for projects being developed on the ground in Lesotho. If you would like tp partner in prayer or financially with mission teams in Lesotho, please visit www.jewelsofhope.org , www.sentebale.org or e-mail lmlesoth@ilesotho.com
